Austwick township quarries
Description

Austwick Township Quarries MYD36648 (c) YDNPA, 2023
East of Austwick lay the township quarries where local people had the right to take stone for their own use. The hillside is pockmarked with shallow pits where stone has been dug over the centuries. There is also a larger quarry higher up the hill where from the early 1850s limestone was quarried and burned commercially.
