The well-preserved earthwork remains of a Medieval corn mill have been surveyed at Newbiggin beside Mill Beck in Bishopdale. The site of the mill building, its leat, millpond and several other structures were discovered. Water was brought to the mill pond using a wooden trough called a falltrough. The use of this type of water system protected the mill and its wheel from being damaged during winter floods.
