This workhouse was operated by the Bainbridge Gilbert Union and was erected around 1810. The Union continued to run the workhouse until 1869 when all remaining Gilbert Unions were finally abolished. A new Aysgarth Poor Law Union was set up covering the civil parishes of Askrigg, Aysgarth, Bainbridge, Burton cum Walden, Hawes, Low Abbotside, Thoralby, Bishopdale, Newbiggin and Thornton Rust. It took over the existing workhouse building. High Hall today is a County Council run care home for the elderly.
