Description

Barningham Memorial MYD34216 (c) YDNPA, 2023
Among the stone grave markers at St Mary the Virgin’s church, Langthwaite is a very unusual cast iron one belonging to Thomas Barningham who died in 1843. He was a member of a family of iron founders. In the 19th century, their company, the Darlington Iron Works, made the first railway lines for countries like New Zealand and Japan and at the time was thought to be the largest iron works in the world. Family members still live in the Dale. The grave marker was recently [1999] restored by the family in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
