Old Hall, Thoralby MYD35728 (c) YDNPA, 2023

Although the porch of this splendid building bears an inscription from the year 1641 there is some suggestion that the main house is even older, though only by a year or two. In most houses of this date the rooms are arranged in a line: here the basic plan form is square, two rooms wide and two rooms deep. In the middle years of the 17th century it was not easy to span such a distance so the house was built with two separate roofs with a valley between. The windows and doors are mostly original though there is at least one clever, 20th century copy.
