Akay Lodge Pepper Pot MYD36662 (c) YDNPA, 2023

Akay House was built soon after 1824 and had a chequered history until it was demolished between 1938 and 1939. The house was designed with extensive pleasure grounds including the ‘Pepper Pot’ near to the estate gate lodge. This was an octagonal garden building, probably intended as a dining room. It survived the demolition.

Location

Take Dent road out of Sedbergh. After about 1/2 mile and just before Milthrop Bridge take public footpath on right signed to 'Birks'. Follow path through field and into woodland that once formed grounds of Akay Lodge. Out of wood, the site lies to left of footpath in field just beyond corner of woodland. Distance from road 500 metres.

Accessibility

Footpath has steps up to kissing gate at start and further steps in woodland. Two hand gates. Path is muddy and uneven in places.
