Craven Old Way MYD36610 (c) YDNPA, 2023

Also known as the Craven Way, this is probably a very old route joining Dent and Ingleton via the flanks of Whernside. It is described as a packhorse route since it crosses quite steep and difficult terrain unsuitable for wheeled vehicles. There are also features such as ‘Horse Well’ (SD737850) along its route which indicate its use by horses. Such routes were of course never exclusively used by one sort of traffic and it is likely that drovers bringing cattle down from Scotland in the 17th and 18th centuries may also have use this route given its north-south direction.
