Dent Station was built on the Settle-Carlisle Railway line sometime in the mid-1870s. The booking hall and waiting rooms it contained are now in private ownership. A separate passenger waiting room stands on the opposite side of the track and 150 metres to the south east is a former railway workers’ barracks building. The station was built in the typical Midland Railway Company ornate ‘Derby Gothic’ style with decorated wooden barge boards, pitched sandstone walls with dressed stone quoins, lintels and window surrounds and a Welsh slate roof. The railway was always intended to be a fast through route to Scotland and so took the shortest course. As a result, local stations were often built at an inconvenient distance from the nearest settlement. Dent Station lies over 4 miles from Dent itself.
