Freeholders’ Wood from the air MYD36617 (c) YDNPA, 2023

This area of semi-ancient woodland is located alongside the famous beauty spot of Aysgarth Falls. In the past it was managed as a coppice woodland with standards. The coppice trees were mainly hazel while the standards were ash and wych elm. The coppice regime has been reinstated by the National Park Authority and at any one time, areas showing different stages of regeneration can be seen. Sadly most of the elm standards have succumbed to Dutch Elm disease. The Freeholders are residents of Carperby village who have the ancient right of ‘estovers’, that is the right to collect small wood. They still exercise that right every year after National Park staff have carried out the annual coppice.
