Holloways, Grinton
Description

Holloways, Grinton MYD36695 (c) YDNPA, 2023
Over hundreds of years of use unsurfaced trackways become eroded. On slopes, such tracks tended to channel rainwater and this eroded them even further forming holloways. In particularly wet weather and during heavy use such routes became quagmires and too deep to pass, so another would be started nearby. At this spot near to Grinton Youth Hostel, packhorse trains carrying lead and other travellers have produced several parallel holloways down the hillside over the years. Motorised transport has led to the establishment of a single routeway, well-drained and with a metalled surface. The remaining routes have grassed over leaving a permanent record.
