A large spoil heap beside the Duke’s New Road at Yarnbury marks the point where a horse whim once operated, drawing spoil and ore up from a shaft called Nixon’s Shaft, sunk in 1821. The horse, attached to the circular wooden whim, walked continuously round in a circle causing ropes to wind up and down. The full diameter of the whim is 12.4 metres measured through the central flat stone.
