Malham pound MYD36589 (c) YDNPA, 2023

The village of Malham has two pinfolds or pounds still preserved. These simple stone-walled enclosures were used to pen straying animals. Sometimes an official called a ‘pinder’ was employed to catch these animals and collect a fine off their owners. The example outside the Youth Hostel was recently restored. It is roughly circular with a narrow entrance.
