Description

A ridgeway route running north east from Windegg in Arkengarthdale to Gayles (Grid ref: NZ123074) beyond the National Park. Moresdale Road may have an ancient origin, but from Medieval times it is known to have been used as a saltway along which salt from the Durham coast was carried into the northern dales. Lead from mines in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale went the other way up until the 19th century.
