Description

The game of quoits is still keenly played in the Yorkshire Dales. The game involves throwing an iron ring towards a metal pin or hob set in a carefully maintained bed of clay. The aim is to encircle the hob with the ring-shaped quoit. The Northern Game rules stipulate that the pitch must be 11 yards long (about 10 metres) with a hob at each end. The quoit itself is about 14 cm across and weighs about 2.5 kg. At Langthwaite in Arkengarthdale new quoits pitches were built on the sports field to celebrate the Millennium. When not in use, the clay beds are covered with wooden boards.
