Raven Scar cave MYD3688 (c) YDNPA 2023

This cave was discovered in 1971 and excavated between 1973 and 1985. The remains of more than 20 burials of late Neolithic and early Bronze Age date were found including a crouched inhumation (a complete skeleton lying in a crouched position). Many of the bones were associated with three slab-and-boulder built cists (coffins), while pottery, flint tools and objects of bone were found scattered in the passage. Several hearths were also discovered along with animal bones and a flint blade of Upper Palaeolithic date.
