Railton Yard spinning gallery, Sedbergh MYD35544 (c) YDNPA, 2023

A first floor spinning gallery now completely restored. The two-storey rubble stone built cottages are probably late 18th or early 19th century. The open gallery is approached by a flight of stone steps and covered with a stone tiled roof. Flax spinning required a damp atmosphere and so open-air galleries such as this were built to take advantage of naturally damp weather conditions. This is the only surviving example of a once common feature of houses in Sedbergh and Dent.
