St Mary and St Cuthbert’s Priory, Embsay
Description
A priory of Augustinian canons was founded at Embsay in 1120 but moved to Bolton Priory 1154-55. There are now no visible remains of the original priory in Embsay although the foundations of a dependent cell that continued on the site were recorded in the early 20th century. Much of the material from the old priory was said to have been used in the construction of the Kirk in Embsay about 1780 and tradition has it that it stands on the site of the priory.
