The house is constructed of local sandstone with a sandstone slate roof. Alterations took place in the 18th century and in the 19th century, the stair turret was altered and the dairy and attached barn/workshop were added. Butter making tended to occupy most of the space in a typical farm dairy. Milk was stood in large shallow bowls for the cream to rise. This was skimmed off then churned to produce the butter.
