Thoralby pound MYD15822 (c) YDNPA, 2023

A small pound or pinfold is situated on the edge of Thoralby village. It is a small roughly square walled enclosure with a narrow entrance gate. Here, animals which had strayed from their fields were impounded, sometimes by a person specifically paid to do the job, called a ‘pinder’. The owners had to pay a fine before they could get their animals back. The pound was restored with the aid of a National Park Authority grant.
