Turf Moor Hush, Langthwaite MYD21546 (c) YDNPA, 2023

This site comprises of the remains of a lead mining hush and shaft mounds within an extensive mining landscape at Moulds Side. The hush dates from the 17th to early 19th century while the mine shafts are of 18th to 19th century date. The geology of the site is interesting. The cliff that can be seen in the side of the hush is of Main Limestone which is faulted against mudstones and overlain by scree from higher gritstone layers. This softer material lying over and alongside the limestone was relatively easily washed out by the force of water used. Tips of spoil and manual ore dressing waste, representing the earliest phase of processing at Moulds Side lie beside the hushes. The shaft mounds are up to 4 metres high by 30 metres in diameter and form impressive rakes following the line of the vein from the upslope end of the hush.
