Description

Ellerton Abbey is named after the small house of Cistercian nuns that was founded here in the late 12th century. The church of Ellerton Priory survives as a picturesque ruin in the former grounds of the house. Ellerton Abbey is a Regency villa, built around 1830 for the Erle-Drax family of Dorset as a shooting lodge. The house is in Regency style and in plan forms three sides of a courtyard; the main house with two projecting service wings at the back. The grounds including the priory church ruins were landscaped and a small lake was created.
